Public Health

Public health is an important area that the world pays a lot of attention to. Our Chairman Ronnie C. Chan and his family have announced to make two donations for public health advancement in 2014.

Donation to Harvard School of Public Health

The Morningside Foundation founded by the family of the late Mr. T.H. Chan, founder of the Hang Lung Group, pledged to donate US$350 million to support the research and teaching conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2014.

In recognition of the donation and in commemoration of the late founder of Hang Lung, Mr. Chan Tseng-hsi, Harvard University has decided to rename the school as the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The donation is used to support students and faculties whose works are dedicated to slowing and reversing four global health threats:

  • Old and new pandemics ranging from malaria to Ebola to obesity and cancer;
  • Harmful physical and social environments ranging from air and water pollution to the impact of gun violence and tobacco;
  • Poverty and humanitarian crises, including war and natural disasters;
  • Failing health systems around the globe, which make healthcare unaffordable, inefficient, and inaccessible to many.

Donation to the University of Southern California (USC)’s occupational science and occupational therapy program

Also in 2014, Mr. Ronnie C. Chan and his wife, Barbara, have dedicated US$20 million to University of Southern California (USC)’s occupational science and occupational therapy program. In recognition of this donation and in honor of Mr. Chan’s mother, USC has renamed the division as USC Mrs. T.H. Chan Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy.

In addition to aiding research in the field, the donation will also help to facilitate the establishment of a partnership between USC and a top Chinese university to develop a graduate program in occupational therapy, benefiting students who would like to pursue a professional career in this field on the Mainland.
