(Hong Kong, February 16, 2015) Hang Lung Properties Limited (HKSE stock code: 101) provided more than 11,000 service hours to communities in Hong Kong and mainland China last year, organizing some 90 volunteer activities. This represents a 70 per cent increase compared to 2013. In recognition of our employees’ contributions to society, a special ceremony was held officiated by Company Chairman Mr. Ronnie C. Chan, who presented certificates to the five employees who recorded the highest service hours in Hong Kong.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Chan shared his personal experiences during the 1990s of counseling youths who were at risk and how he has given back to society by means of a variety of platforms over the years. He said, “The time I spend on volunteering and philanthropy business is certainly not less than the time I spend on my own business! We should all try our best to give back to society in whatever way we can. I hope colleagues will turn volunteering into a habit and endeavor to give back to society no matter which position they are in.”
Mr. William Du, a 27-year-old management trainee now working in the leasing and management department, contributed nearly 150 service hours in 2014. Born in Shanghai and having decided to continue his university studies in Hong Kong, Mr. Du actively participated in the Company’s volunteer activities during his training with Hang Lung. He is especially devoted to helping underprivileged young people. Beginning last year, Mr. Du has been participating in editorial and management work for Social Dialogue Magazine, a periodical that focuses on international social issues and published by The International Association of Schools of Social Work. Mr. Du said, “I am highly honored to be able to participate in editorial and fundraising work for the magazine. I hope to use my voluntary service to help raise public awareness of different social issues, to deepen their understanding of the world and the needs of the weak and underprivileged.”
Hang Lung Properties established the “Hang Lung As One” volunteer team in July 2012 with the aim of serving the community in three target areas: youth development, environmental protection, and service to the elderly. Until now, Hang Lung has set up volunteer teams in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenyang, Jinan, Wuxi, Tianjin, Dalian and Kunming, attracting some 1,500 volunteers. The teams organize different types of activities which enable volunteers to acquire new skill sets and to transfer their knowledge and experience to beneficiaries. It is a truly reciprocal relationship of mutual benefit.
In the past year, volunteer teams organized a number of new activities with executive support: Mr. Adrian Lo, Assistant Director – Project Construction, helped to lead an architectural tour program which explained to secondary school students the architectural style and cultural background of buildings in the University of Hong Kong; Mr. Raymond Mak, Assistant Director and Group Financial Controller, cleared rubbish in Deep Bay with 60 primary school students; Mr Adriel Chan, Senior Manager, stimulated primary school students’ creativity through an art jamming activity; volunteers in Shenyang brought more than 100 students from a school for the visually impaired to the PALACE cinema at Forum 66, allowing the students to experience the fun of movies by listening to them.
In 2015, the volunteer teams will continue to organize a diverse range of volunteer activities to achieve three targets namely, skill transfer, family participation and innovation.
